My 4-Part Approach
While every family’s situation is different, our work together typically involves these four key components.
We can move between these elements as your situation evolves.
Crisis Intervention
I’ll help you make sense of your loved one’s behavior so it doesn’t feel as frightening or unpredictable. We’ll work together to set healthy, protective boundaries that allow you to stay grounded and present. I’ll guide you through specific responses that reduce risk, avoid escalating the episode, and support your loved one’s safety without sacrificing your own well-being.
Caregiver Support
It’s common to feel a mix of fear, guilt, anger, and helplessness. Many caregivers carry these emotions in silence. These sessions provide a safe, judgment-free space to talk openly about what you’re going through. Together, we’ll process these complex emotions and build personalized strategies to help you stay grounded, protect your own well-being, and show up as a steady, supportive presence for your loved one.
Psychoeducation
You’ll develop a clear understanding of bipolar disorder, its symptoms, episodes, and recovery. I explain manic and depressive states using both clinical knowledge and lived experience, helping you make sense of what once felt chaotic. You’ll learn what to expect now, what to watch for later, and how lasting recovery unfolds.
Planning for Recovery
If your loved one isn’t ready for help, we’ll work together to prepare - developing respectful, effective ways to communicate. This foundation increases the likelihood they’ll accept support when the time is right. Often, after guiding families through a manic episode, I begin individual sessions with their loved one during a depressive phase to support long-term stability.
